December 1, 2009 – Opening Art Basel 2009
Art Basel welcomes an intriguing, French power couple who celebrate art. The Ricart Gallery embraces and shares their one-year anniversary with art lovers in Miami.
MIAMI FL-The Design District is exactly that, a macrocosm of galleries, trendy bars, quaint, and lively restaurants, alike. This rapidly sprawling urban landscape is transforming the area into a “sense”-ual delight. Among these gems is Ricart Gallery, a prestigious gallery that offers a prodigious selection of talented, emerging and established artists, plucked from different cities around the world.
The expertise and masterful taste behind this gallery’s selection of what can be called “investment art”, art that is powerful, moving, has strong selling power and holds worth, is provided by the virtuoso twosome Caroline Herail and Martial Ricart. Caroline is a painter herself, starting off over a decade ago in Paris before he and her husband moved to Miami. Her large canvases with their bright, bold coloured faces are showcased in the gallery among the rest of the beautiful artwork. Caroline has a raw and authentic sensibility for seeking out emerging artists. Over the years she has harnessed a gift for uncovering talent with a strong voice. She is an artist who not only understands the statement behind every brushstroke, camera flash, or sculpting hand, but also strives to share these voices with the world. Whether it be on display in her gallery for sale, or by hosting an exhibition.
Martial, her other half, and gallery director, acquires art of another kind. With a keen eye for dramatic pieces, he seeks out investment art. “There are three ways of purchasing art; the most common is to purchase a piece with the objective to decorate and please the eye, as one would do with a lamp or exquisite chair. These are objects that remain affordable and won’t necessarily acquire selling power or worth over time; yet we all know that sentiment makes that object all the more rich in the eye of the beholder. Then there are ‘masterpieces’, pieces that have recognition and are sought after due to their technique and the artist’s name. These hold monetary value, which fluctuates according to different factors. Then we have investment art that is most often dictated by growing and emerging artists who are being noticed or endorsed by museums, well-known galleries or collectors. You have to keep in mind that this type of art constitutes a mere 1-2% of the market. Therefore, we can say that art can be an investment, but it remains very limited in its selection.”
It becomes evident that what sets Ricart Gallery apart, rests on its assertive notion and realization of what investment art truly is without every denying the timeless masterpieces, or new testimonies that reflect artists perception of our present era through their work. Together the Ricart power couple travel the world together searching for fresh faces and distinct pieces to add to their impressive collection that ranges from photography to sculpture to paintings. Not only are the both well versed in contemporary art, but they can provide consultation with interior designers, appraisals and auctions. Known for hosting solo and group exhibitions, it only seems appropriate that they are kick-starting this year’s 2009 Art Basel with their one year anniversary party.
