Li Songsong is interested in the power of images. Working exclusively from archive photos found in books, newspapers and the internet, his paintings place familiar scenes out of context, rendering their meaning as null and alien, misfit within collective consciousness. Through the act of painting, Li replicates the conceptual processes of photographic reproduction as a proposal to re-claim authenticity. His compositions border on abstraction, addressing history as a subjective conjugation and highlighting the gulf between personal experience and public modes of representation.
